Supporting Communication for All Ages

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) help people of all ages develop or regain the ability to speak, read, write and think clearly, and swallow properly. Maryville University offers both online and on-campus options for completing the Speech-Language Pathology master’s program. At Maryville, graduates are prepared for CCC-SLP status (Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology) and state licensure in Missouri or elsewhere (both require completion of a Clinical Fellowship Year after the master’s degree). Common work environments include hospitals, rehabilitation centers, clinics, schools, daycares, Telehealth systems and home health care settings.

Clients of SLPs can be:

Autistic individuals
Those who have experience stroke or brain injuries
Children and adults who stutter
People with speech-sound disorders
Those with language delays or differences

In addition to providing education to patients and families, SLPs offer a wide range of support and intervention services. Beyond direct therapy, SLPs also help patients and families cope with the social and emotional impacts of communication challenges. They collaborate closely with other professionals to ensure coordinated and holistic care. Additionally, SLPs play an important role in advocacy, empowering patients and families to speak up for their communication needs in educational, medical, and community settings. SLPs also provide extensive education to patients and families.”

A student applying to the Maryville University program, on campus or online, must complete an application and submit all requirements through the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Science and Disorders’ online application.
