In 1994, Maryville adopted the image of a Saint Bernard dog as its mascot. The original logo design was created by a committee made up of vice presidents, faculty, and staff. Once the Saint Bernard dog costume was created, students held a contest to name the dog. After a vote, “Bosco” was the ...unanimous winner. He was named for St. John Bosco, known for his dog who magically appeared in times of trouble.
Bosco came to life with student and staff volunteers who wore the costume. In 2005, a new athletic logo was unveiled to renew the spirit of Saints athletics. The logo was a contemporary and bold portrayal of Maryville’s Saint Bernard mascot framed in a circular flow by the words “Maryville Saints.”
A committee of students and staff brainstormed for more than a year on how Maryville’s athletic teams should be portrayed, including changing the mascot’s nickname from Bosco to Louie.
In 2012, a new "dog" was symbolically adopted by Louie from the Humane Society. The student body voted on Twitter to help Louie name Maryville’s newest family member, and Louie Jr. (L.J.) was the winner. Today, Louie and L.J. are a fixture at all athletic events and serve as community figures, both on and off campus.
