Welcome to our July Adjunct Faculty Newsletter – we hope you are having a wonderful summer! For those of you teaching this summer, we hope your engagement with students has been positive and that the learning is active and fulfilling. For those of you already thinking about the fall, we hope you are taking the time to think about how you might put into practice ideas from your Active Learning and/or Diversity and Inclusion reflections from the Adjunct Faculty Academy. We are always available to help you think through your ideas to help them come to fruition in your on-ground or online class environment. The theme for this newsletter is resources and support – the Finch Center for Teaching and Learning continues to offer outstanding programming and to centralize resources to help you work effectively with your students!

• Fall professional development dates are set for REAL Week, August 12-16. Laura Ross and Jesse Kavadlo are putting the finishing touches on their plans for the week; details about the array of topics being offered for the week will be forthcoming very soon. Adjunct faculty are welcome to attend sessions on Wednesday 8/14 and Thursday 8/15 for teaching and learning sessions. Please plan on attending our special workshop just for you on Thursday, August 15th from 6-8:30 p.m. Every semester, more and more adjunct faculty attend these events and continue to get more connected to the campus – this is highly valued and encouraged!
• This edition’s video features the value and purpose of our Adjunct Faculty Professional Development experiences and what some of our adjunct faculty are saying about their continued growth and learning and how their involvement helps them work with students.
• The University Library is also featured below. The librarians do an excellent job creating LibGuides for any course that would like one – they compile key resources into one place to help you and your students focus your research energies on content. Check out this section if you think having a LibGuide would be a valuable resource for your course.
• The Adjunct Academy continues to go well. Content there provides context for the Active Learning Ecosystem and our commitment to Diversity and Inclusion. A few policies and procedures are highlighted as well (e.g., Title IX, providing reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities, and use of Canvas as our Learning Management System). If you have not yet had a chance to check it out, please take the time to do so as it will help you understand our and students’ expectations of you as a faculty member at Maryville. For those of you who have already completed the Academy – THANK YOU for your commitment to us and to our students!
• iPads are available as a learning resource to those who are primarily teaching our on-ground, undergraduate students. If you are interested in being part of the Digital World initiative, please talk with your Program Director about your interest and about how you would like to be more engaged in this initiative.
New initiatives for FALL 2019:
• DIGITAL FIRST COURSE MATERIALS ensures that all students have access to the course materials for every course on DAY 1. All course materials will be provided to students through the RedShelf link in Canvas. They will have a choice whether to retain the digital version or obtain the print version. For students in the Inclusive OneFee (full-time traditional undergraduate and full-time graduate students), one version will be paid for by Maryville from their OneFee; for all other students (primarily part-time), they will have the same choices, but will be expected to pay for their own materials. Students will have two weeks to make their choice, so may look to you to help answer questions. In particular, their digital access will be removed if they do not pay for it, so this could create some confusion. MUCH MORE INFORMATION will be forthcoming on this initiative, so watch your email and don’t hesitate to ask questions, as you will also likely need to be able to help answer students’ questions (although there will be a very active Help Desk to navigate your and students’ concerns).
Finally, as always, we welcome your feedback on the professional development, resources, and support being shared with you, and we are eager to know if there are additional needs you have. You may connect with your program director, members of the Adjunct Advisory Council, Laura and Jesse, or me with any idea or issue you want to share or address.
Best wishes for the remainder of the summer!
Tammy M. Gocial, Ph.D.
Associate Academic Vice President

Recap of Perspectives Week: Adjunct Workshop
By Kristen Wellinghoff, Adjunct Professor of Communications, CTL Adjunct Advisory Council member, 2017-2019
The Center for Teaching and Learning hosted an Adjunct Workshop as part of Perspectives Week on Thursday, May 16. Held at the end of the Spring Semester, Perspectives Week aims to provide opportunities for faculty to grow as educators and individuals, connect to colleagues, observe diverse teaching styles, and inspire new ideas in the classroom. Thirty-five adjuncts attended the Adjunct Faculty Workshop, which included dinner, resource tables, and workshop sessions.
Participants had the opportunity to explore resources for the Library, Learning Technology and Support, the Center for Teaching and Learning Adjunct Advisory Council, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and Life Coaches/Early Alert. The workshop sessions included Diversity and Inclusion (presented by Tiffany Reed and Ashley Storman from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion), Student Engagement/Involvement (presented by Jesse Kavadlo and Laura Ross from the Center for Teaching and Learning), and open dialogue with Tammy Gocial, Associate Academic Vice President. If you are interested in learning more about these topics, please see the resources below:
Diversity and Inclusion
The Diversity and Inclusion session focused on a privilege walk, which is designed to allow participants an opportunity to understand the intricacies of privilege while exploring ways that we as individuals enjoy privilege based on our social membership groups. This activity is not about blame but more of an opportunity to explore power or privilege with the occasion to identify the obstacles and benefits experienced in one’s life.
Student Engagement/Involvement
In this session presented by the Center for Teaching and Learning, participants broke into three working groups and presented creative ideas on how these topics could be implemented into their individual courses.

Make sure to mark your calendar for REAL WEEK: August 12-16! REAL Week is a weeklong internal, teaching and learning convention. Our Adjunct Faculty Workshop will be held on Thursday, August 15, and more information about scheduling coming soon. We hope to see you there!
From the Maryville University Library
The Maryville University Library staff can help full-time and adjunct faculty with course design and other professional needs by creating Research Guides on specified topics. Research Guides are Library-produced web collections that compile a variety of Library resources, such as articles, web pages, books, and videos, that are tailored to your needs. Research Guides can augment your other course materials and enhance student learning.
The University Library also creates these LibGuides for Maryville staff, student organizations, and the campus community at large. Click on the links below to take a look at three different Research Guides created for University faculty to provide diverse classroom resources and assist with course design.
