Chammie Austin

Courses Taught: Dr. Austin’s teaching interests include General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Multicultural Psychology, Senior Seminar, Counseling and Clinical Psychology, Practicum, and Research Methods.

Interests and Expertise: Dr. Austin research interests are in issues related to academic achievement, racial identity and identification, diversity in mental health, and counselor development.

Courses Taught: Darlene teaches at both the introductory fundamental studio level and the senior capstone level, which encompasses a student’s transition from academia to the professional world. She is a firm believer in service learning and has collaborated with the not-for-profit St. Louis Modern Chinese school and Parkway School District’s Shenandoah Elementary School.

Interests and Expertise: Darlene’s education as an architect provides a foundation in learner-centered teaching through direct experience. She finds one key to effective learning is to establish a successful working relationship with students and encouraging contact between students and faculty is one of the most important factors in learner motivation and involvement. She believes it is important to prepare students not just to enter their profession, but also to become contributing members of society with a spirit of service and commitment.

Interests and Expertise: Action Research, Scholarship of Teaching & Learning, Assessment, & Counseling Pedagogy

Michael has degrees in early childhood education, rehabilitation counseling, and a Ph.D. in counselor education and has worked in private and not for profit rehabilitation settings. Currently he is a certified rehabilitation counselor, member of the National Rehabilitation Association, and president of the Missouri Rehabilitation Association, Eastern Chapter. Michael stays active in the St. Louis community by volunteering at St. Patrick Center primarily counseling veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. In addition, he has numerous publications including a co-authored book on strength based counseling and articles on career decision making, action research, counseling pedagogy, and active and dynamic learning strategies. He has also presented at international, national, state, and local conferences.

Sandy Ross

Courses Taught: Sandy’s teaching responsibilities include courses at the graduate level; Kinesiology I & II (the study of human movement), Research Methods, Research Proposal I & II, Research Symposium and Functional Development (a pediatrics course).

Interests and Expertise: Sandy’s research interests include the study of gait (how people walk) and helping children with cerebral palsy. As part of the graduate curriculum, the courses taught are designed mostly at the application/analysis level. The areas where Sandy may be most helpful to colleagues include engaging students in the classroom and developing critical thinking strategies during course presentations and labs. She also feels comfortable with incorporating research or evidence-based projects into a course.

Bonnie Stegman

Courses Taught: Bonnie’s clinical specialty is emergency nursing and EMS. Prior to becoming a registered nurse (RN) she was a paramedic. She currently teaches online nursing leadership, nursing informatics, and nursing research along with roles and responsibilities of the community paramedic, community assessment and chronic disease management. She firmly believes in the principles of the adult learner which was one of the areas of emphasis in her PhD in Education program.

Interests and Expertise: Bonnie converted the BSN completion program to an online format along with adapting the following courses: transition to professional nursing, nursing informatics, nursing research and nursing leadership. She also proposed, developed and implemented the online Community Paramedic Certificate Program. She created the roles & responsibilities of the community paramedic, community assessment and the practicum online courses. Her research interests include cultural competence, caring, digital education and EMS education.

Dan Rocchio

Professor Emeritus of Education

Courses Taught: Prior to joining Maryville University, Dan taught reading and English at the elementary and secondary levels in several area school districts. As an Adjunct Professor Dan currently teaches Education 619: Action Research for Teachers and Education 699: Capstone for the Masters in Education. In addition Dan is currently developing an online course, Education 619: Action Research for Teachers.

Interests and Expertise: During the 2013-2014 school year Dan was Chief Investigator for a study: Evaluation of the OASIS Inter-generational Tutoring Program. During the last 10 years he has conducted action research related to literacy in several school districts including Rockwood and Lindbergh. As Director of the Graduate Program in Literacy before retirement in May of 2011, Dan directed the action research of teacher cohorts in several districts including Parkway, Hazelwood, and Ladue. In addition, Dan has many years of experience observing and coaching public school teachers at all grade levels within all disciplines.
