Little feels better than belonging to a community of individuals to whom you can relate, who help you grow as an intellectual and who appreciate the same kinds of things as you. Finding a community like this can be difficult in large state schools, but at Maryville, it's well within reach.
The Bascom Honors Program (BHP) is a community of students and faculty who love learning, whether it's about the architecture of downtown St. Louis, the history of 13th century Britain or advanced mathematical theories. Regardless of their focus, participants are constantly expanding their educational and personal goals, and succeeding.
Specifically, the program aims to:
- Provide intellectual and social engagement that allows honors students to develop to their highest potential.
- Foster an appreciation of the liberal arts to enrich students' academic lives and promote a commitment to lifelong learning.
- Help students discover how the various academic disciplines relate to one another, to the world beyond academia and to their own lives in both the professional and personal contexts.
- Help students acquire the skills necessary to take responsibility for their own learning and to achieve all of their life goals.
- Establish a learning environment that encourages independence of thought and use of academic experiences to develop a personal set of values.
- Foster an attitude of responsibility to self and community.

"Honors courses are easier for me because there is not so much busy work. There is more discussion that helps me to understand and delve into subjects a little deeper."
Curtis Graham
"The Honors program allows for an enriched learning opportunity because of the greater in-class discussion."
Joel Barz
"I would recommend Honors to anyone who wants a challenge and wants to learn."
Jacob Thoma
"I like the colloquiums because they allow all students to expand their views on a variety of topics."
