Grading Policies

Grading Standards

The grading standards for all Physical Therapy Program courses are:

93 – 100 = A
90 – 92.9 = A-
86 – 89.9 = B+
83 – 85.9 = B
80 – 82.9 = B-
77 – 79.9 = C+
74 – 76.9 = C
70 – 73.9 = C-
Below 70 = D
Below 60 = F

Grade Point Average (GPA)

A student in the Physical Therapy Program must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 each semester. When a student’s semester GPA and/or cumulative GPA are below 3.0, he/she will be on Physical Therapy Program Academic Probation the following semester.

At the end of one semester on probation (a) if the student earns a semester and/or cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better the probation will be removed, or (b) if the student earns less than 3.0 on the GPA(s) in question he/she will be dismissed from the Physical Therapy Program and must meet with the Program Director.

Grades in Physical Therapy Courses (PHTH Prefix)

Any student not earning a grade of B- or better in any physical therapy course (PHTH prefix) is dismissed from the Program (see Grading Standards section).

Grades in Non-Physical Therapy Required Courses

Any student not earning a grade of “C” or better in any non-PHTH undergraduate course required for the physical therapy curriculum will be placed on academic probation and will be required to meet with their adviser to establish an academic plan. The academic plan will be submitted to the adviser within one week following the meeting.

Any student who receives a C-, D or F in a non-PHTH, non-sequential course (example: HIST, MATH) can retake that course one time and pass with a grade of C or better before enrolling in the course(s) for which it is a prerequisite. Earning a grade lower than a C for the repeated course will not be acceptable and the student will be dismissed from the program. Successful completion of all courses in the first three years of the BS in Health Science is a requirement before moving into the fourth year and graduate work.

Any student not earning a grade of C or better in a non-PHTH undergraduate course will be expected to retake that course prior to entry into the fourth year of the physical therapy program or before enrolling in the course(s) for which it is a prerequisite.

Any student not earning a grade of B- or better in any non-PHTH graduate course is dismissed from the Program (see Grading Standards section).

Sequential Courses without PHTH Prefixes

If a student earns a grade of C- in a non-PHTH undergraduate course (example: chemistry, physics) that is the first course in a sequence during the semester in which it is required, he/she will be allowed to enroll in the second sequential course for the next semester in which it is offered. Earning a B+ or better in the second sequential course will exempt the student from having to retake the first course in the sequence. Earning a grade of B, B-, C+, or C in the second sequential course will require the student to retake the first course in the sequence before entering the fourth year in the program or before enrolling in the course(s) for which it is a prerequisite. Earning a grade lower than a C in the second sequential course will not be acceptable and the student will be dismissed from the program.
