An Overview of Graphic Design at Maryville

(gentle electronic music) That's one of the most important things a graphic designer does is takes complex, hard to understand information and transforms that into something engaging, something easily understood so that users of all types can understand often pretty complex information. Literally anything that you touch or people interact with, from packaging to some sort of promotional poster to animation, to everything that falls under that umbrella is what graphic design is. And the Maryville program they teach us just that. You know, they show us the principles and the elements of art and design, and we use that and apply it to essentially anything that we wanted to do. What sold it was, I came to this building and met the faculty. Everybody is like, they greet me with open arms, like "Hey, Jacob, how are you?" And then talk to me, show me around classrooms during classes and it was just like, I knew that I wanted to be at Maryville. So it didn't matter what I had to do to get here, I was gonna come to Maryville, just because the faculty sold me on it. All of our students are required an internship, which also really kinda speaks to our professional orientation, or our desire to kinda create somebody who is practice ready, or ready to go out and become a graphic designer. That is the toe on the water to build your connections in the professional world, to have experience in that. And so most of us, by the time we're ready to graduate do have jobs already lined up. I really like the smaller campus, since it's easy for me, it's easier to get to class. And then also the community feel is better than the colleges I saw. There's something magical about this place, in that, just the type of classes that we run are very open, very conducive to being a creative person and being a collaborative person. And because of our small class sizes, we are limited to our class sizes to about 15 per studio. And so we get a lot of opportunity to interact with the students, the students get a lot of opportunity to interact with each other, and that really creates a positive community atmosphere. Like, one of the neatest things about graphic design is that, literally you can just catch someone's eye with a simple thing, like a little poster. And then you can get them to go and do all these things just by the aesthetics of it, and I think that's really neat. (gentle electronic music)
