On many Saturday mornings, Maryville University students can be found volunteering with I-Skate at Creve Coeur Ice Arena. The program, which runs from October through April, serves young people with disabilities who want to improve their ice skating skills.

“Maryville volunteers always have a smile on their faces and are willing to help, and do whatever it takes to make it an enjoyable experience for the athlete,” says John Bauer, organizer of the ice-skating program.

Maryville University’s Community Service Club sponsors the volunteer opportunity for students.

“Through this program, students engage with diverse people, and provide volunteer service in a variety of settings. Community service helps students develop in multiple ways, and usually they find out they get more out of the experience than they give,” says Steve DiSalvo, director of campus ministry and community service.

Students who participate in the ice-skating program realize community service is important. “Everyone has the opportunity to make a difference, and if everyone served others the world would be a better place,” says senior Christina Gerst.
