What’s your Maryville experience?
My experience at Maryville has been very rewarding in multiple phases of life. I first attended Maryville shortly after starting my professional career in information technology at Anheuser-Busch. I would work during the day and attend classes at night, with a goal of deepening my business knowledge. Soon after completing the MBA program, I began adjunct teaching in the John E. Simon School of Business. I still worked during the day but also fulfilled my passion for teaching others and spent many evenings as an instructor. Fast forward to recent years, I have volunteered my time to support the amazing cybersecurity program through speaking to students and supporting the placement of student interns through my current employer. Lastly, and most gratifying, my daughter has participated in several of the STEM camps at Maryville, and it is a surreal full circle moment aligning my passion directly to my legacy.
What’s your favorite Maryville memory?
My favorite Maryville memory is returning to campus for the launch of the DeBaun Alumni network. It was very eye opening to learn about many other amazing alums who have attended Maryville, and also wonderful to make new connections.
What are you doing now?
I currently serve as the Vice President of the Global Security Governance Risk and Compliance for Reinsurance Group of America right here in St. Louis. In this role, I am a key advisor for the organization regarding cyber and technology risks, and I have the privilege of leading a dynamic team of professionals that ensure security risks are effectively managed. I also serve as a board member and secretary for CyberUp, wecyberup.org/, an organization dedicated to transforming how individuals interested in cybersecurity learn skills and employers source new talent. I enjoy encouraging women and girls to consider career paths in technology and continue to mentor young professionals who are up and coming in the industry. Outside of work, my husband and I spend many weekends cheering on our daughter who loves playing basketball.
Additional goals and aspirations?
I am committed to helping others (especially women) propel their careers in cyber and technology.
How did your education and experience at Maryville help you?
Attending Maryville only during the evenings as a student was much different than the traditional undergraduate student experience I had. However, I made several lasting connections because of Maryville that are still relevant to me today. I was young, eager, and learned firsthand when dedication and focus prevail, anything is possible.
Words of wisdom for today’s students?
My mantra – see your potential, identify your purpose, and advance your passion.
