Many higher education experts believe retaining students in higher education may be more difficult than recruiting them in the first place.

According to recent statistics released on August 17, 2007 by U.S. News and World Report, the retention rate fluctuates between 64 and 89 percent among the best universities in the Midwest. Maryville is ranked number 29 in this survey.

In terms of retaining its students, however, Maryville is near the top of the chart that measures rates over a four-year period. Maryville’s average retention rate is 78 percent (from freshman to sophomore year)–up one percent from the 2007 U.S. News and World Report survey. The University is expected to announce its 2008 retention rate in early September and indicators show the rate will be much higher than the four-year average shown in the recent U.S. News & World Report data.

The U.S. News & World Report data indicated that Columbia University in Missouri reported its retention rate at 64 percent and Xavier University in Ohio topped the chart at 89 percent.
