Students Representing Maryville In Art Show

Like any artist, Katie Tulk knows the most important thing besides the work itself is getting people to see it. That’s why she’s so excited to be one of two students representing Maryville University at Art St. Louis’ upcoming Varsity Art XI exhibit, which opens January 22 in the Art Saint Louis 7th floor Annex Gallery, located at 917 Locust Street.
“I was very exited to hear that Becky and I were chosen for this event, seeing as it is one of the more awaited annual events in the St. Louis art community,” said Tulk of Manchester, a junior majoring in studio art at Maryville. Tulk and senior Rebecca Orf of Wentzville, also a studio art major at Maryville, were chosen by Nancy Rice, director of Maryville’s art and design program, and studio art program, to represent the University in the Varsity Art XI show.
The exhibit will feature the work of 28 undergraduate and graduate art students from 14 area colleges and universities. The show runs through March 1. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday. A free opening reception will be held from 7-9 p.m., January 20.
“I am thrilled to be displaying my work with Rebecca,” Tulk said. “She and I have talked and we agreed that our work complements each other conceptually and visually.” Tulk works in mixed media, primarily narrative pieces involving embroidery, drawing and collage, while Orf focuses on alternative methods in photography. “Katie and Rebecca work in very different media,” Rice said. “Their subject matter is also vastly different. They are both very interesting young artists to watch.”
Tulk said she attended the 2006 Varsity Art Exhibit and was very impressed with the work she saw. Her work appeared in last year’s Venus Envy, St Louis exhibit and in the show “6,” an exhibit honoring Women’s History Month that was on display at Maryville’s campus.
In May, Orf will have a solo exhibit of her work on display at the Morton J. May Foundation Gallery on Maryville’s campus.
