Students Intern at NFL Players Association Game

Maryville welcomed 16 sport business management students and two faculty members home from San Antonio, Texas, this week, where they  worked as interns for the NFL Player’s Association Game, the Texas vs. The Nation collegiate all-star match-up played at the Alamodome last Saturday. Maryville University is the official intern provider of the game.

“This experience is just another example of how sport businesses believe in, and recognize, the value of what we are teaching our students here at Maryville,” said Jason Williams, assistant professor of sport business management and a faculty adviser for the event. Professor Rich Kilgore, PhD, also traveled with the students as an adviser.

Marketing and organizing the event was a capstone experience for students like senior John Murar.

“This was my second year working with the bowl game. It really just opens my eyes to all the work it takes in the business of sport to put on an event. Before, I just went to a game and watched as a fan, but when you get behind the scenes you see how much work it is to put on a three-hour event ,” he said. “I personally had 28 players to take care of, communicate with and keep on their daily schedules. We worked 14-16 hour days – a lot of hard work and long days – but it didn’t seem like work or like the days were that long. And being right there on the sidelines during the game was one of the most rewarding things about the whole experience.”
