- How is the spring semester changing? NEW
We have made several shifts to the spring semester schedule. All on-campus instruction will begin January 19 giving students time following the holidays to prepare for a safe return to campus. Additionally, spring break, scheduled for March 8-12 has shifted. Instead, the University will add days to the Easter holiday weekend giving students, faculty and staff a break from Thursday, April 1 through Tuesday, April 6.
- How does the spring semester remain the same? NEW
The spring semester continues in the same flexible, hybrid model as the fall semester. We will continue to maintain a socially-distanced on-campus experience with the same multiple class formats from which to choose.
- What are the class formats? NEW

- Is there any change to the Pass/No Pass policy for the Spring 2021 semester? NEW
Here is the current policy as defined in the catalog: Students are limited to a total of three undergraduate courses, not required by major or minor, for the Pass/No Pass option. “Pass” is defined as achieving a grade of C- or better; credit will be earned.
As of the Spring 2021 semester, the process for requesting Pass/No Pass is as follows:
- The deadline to opt-in for P/NP grades can be found on the Academic Calendar. It aligns with the last day to withdraw, which generally is the end of the 6th week for 8-week courses, and the end of the 12th week for 16-week courses.
- The total allowed P/NP courses during a student’s time at Maryville has increased from two to three. Because of the Department of Education actions, any Pass/No Pass courses taken during the Spring 2020 semester do not count toward the three-course limit.
If you are interested in this option, please first review the Pass/No Pass instructions. Then, access the Request Form at community.maryville.edu under the Forms tab to request a change to one of your courses from a letter grade to Pass/No Pass.
- What’s the difference between virtual and online courses?
Virtual courses meet on specific days and times through Zoom.Online courses are typically 8-week, accelerated and completely asynchronous (meaning there are no scheduled or required meeting times) offering full flexibility for students to engage on their own schedule from anywhere. Online courses will begin on January 11th as originally scheduled.
This fall, we are launched Online Plus courses designed to provide the convenience of online but more aligned to the academic calendar of a traditional face-to-face course (16 week). While these courses will not require in-person attendance, they are designed with options for enhanced engagement through synchronous experiences. At this time, most Online Plus classes are in foundational courses and are being developed this summer.
Hybrid courses are a mixture of face-to-face on campus experience plus synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning.
- How do I know my mixed attendance schedule? NEW
On-campus 8-week courses will start on January 11 and will be held virtually for the first week.
*Specialty classes (labs, studios, etc.) may meet in-person for the first session and students will be notified by their instructor.Mixed Attendance Classes
On campus mixed attendance courses start on January 19. The following chart shows how Maryville plans to split mixed attendance sections. Some examples are listed below as well. Please note:- Classes meeting only one-day per week will meet as scheduled. Students are expected to attend this day regardless of other mixed attendance guidelines.
- Classes meeting in the evening (5 p.m. or later) will meet as scheduled.

- If my class size is smaller, will there still be mixed attendance or is there a chance I would attend class on campus as planned?
Yes. Courses scheduled in spaces where safety and social distancing guidelines can be met will be able to meet on campus as planned.- How will I know if my first class is going to be virtual or in-person?
In the COVID-19 Training Course we asked you to complete in Canvas, there was a module discussing our flexible, hybrid academic model for this academic year. Even after you complete the training, you can still refer back to it for a review of the important information we shared about class attendance and community health guidelines. Professors or program directors will communicate attendance schedules via Canvas. If you need assistance, you may contact the Solution Squad at ssc@maryville.edu or by calling 314-529-9360.
*Specialty classes (labs, studios, etc.) may meet in-person the first session.
- Will add/drop dates change since the semester is shifting to one week later? NEW
The add/drop deadline for courses beginning the week of January 11 will remain the same with a deadline of January 17, 2021. However, those courses beginning the week of January 19 will have an add/drop deadline of January 25, 2021.- If I don’t feel comfortable coming to class on campus, can I attend virtually?
Yes. Be assured we are doing everything possible to create a healthy, safe environment in which you can continue your academic journey seamlessly. If there are times you aren’t comfortable on campus, we understand and will work with you.
Even with maximum attendance flexibility, however, there are essential hands-on experiences and skills that require face-to-face meeting. We are exploring a variety of options in lab and clinical based courses to lessen the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission.
If you prefer remote learning, you may wish to consider our new offering of 16-week Online Plus courses or our 8-week Online course options.
- How will the shift in the semester impact attendance reporting?
Attendance reporting will occur, as usual, during the second week of class meetings. The Academic Records team will send reminders to faculty and will be available if there are any questions.- When will I receive my financial aid refund? NEW
Students enrolled in an exclusively online program, or a program with on-campus 8 week courses, will be issued refunds during the second week of class meetings, as usual.Students enrolled in traditional undergraduate programs or graduate on-campus programs (16-week programs), will have refunds processed following the add/drop deadline of January 25, 2021.
- What about Commencement? NEW
The date for Commencement is unchanged. We will have a commencement and it will be either in-person, online or a hybrid format. We are closely monitoring the pandemic and evaluating upcoming events that involve students, alumni and/or the general public. The University is exploring options to safely celebrate our graduates and adhere to public health guidelines. When a decision is made, we will inform graduates as soon as possible.- What requirements are in place for nursing clinical requirements due to COVID-19?
Students actively enrolled in a clinical rotation will be required to complete a COVID-19 screening and record their temperature twice daily in CastleBranch. Some clinical sites are requiring additional education and documentation regarding the use of PPE as well as the risks associated with clinical rotations.
- How will attendance policies be affected by COVID-19?
Regular engagement in your courses will be a high priority whether you experience them virtually or on-campus. To offer maximum flexibility you will be able to attend class virtually as your own health or family circumstances dictate. As in any other term, if you are unable to attend class either in person or virtually, you should be in communication with your instructor.
Even with maximum attendance flexibility, however, there are essential hands-on experiences and skills that require face-to-face meeting. We are exploring a variety of options in lab and clinical based courses to lessen the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission.
- Will any of my foundational courses automatically switch to an Online Plus offering or will I have the option to enroll in one?
At this time, Online Plus courses are choices made by students.
- My program requires an internship to graduate but many companies are no longer offering internships due to COVID-19. Will internships still be mandatory?
Students participating in a program that requires an internship to graduate are encouraged to work with their program director and faculty member to find alternatives if they are unable find an in-person internship opportunity. We are committed to supporting each student’s progress to completion.
- Will life coaching be done on-campus or virtually?
Life coaching and other student support services will be available both on-campus and virtually. Faculty, life coaches and students have found that Zoom is an excellent option for advising sessions; however, on-campus sessions following health guidelines (e.g., wearing masks, social distancing) will remain an option.
