Letter from Vice President of Student Life to Students

Dear Maryville Students,

I hope you are enjoying your winter break and are staying healthy. We’re excited and ready to welcome you back to campus next week. I commend everyone for your diligence last semester to keep our community SaintStrong.

As we prepare for the start of the spring semester, I want to update you on our COVID-19 protocols. We planned to communicate with you on this matter earlier in the break but given the nation-wide testing shortage, only yesterday were we able to confirm the delivery of tests needed for our campus.

Please read the following updates that impact us all:

Return to Campus Testing
Considering the surge in COVID-19 cases across the country due to the highly transmissible Omicron variant, all residential students, student athletes, and all unvaccinated commuter students are required to complete a COVID-19 test when returning to campus.

We will be utilizing a self-administered COVID-19 test by Ellume. Tests will be available for pick up by residential students and unvaccinated commuters this weekend, Saturday, January 8, and Sunday, January 9 in the Donius University Center Atrium between 10AM and 6PM. For those arriving to campus later, tests will be available in Huttig Chapel between 8AM-5PM on Monday, January 10, and 9AM-5PM on Tuesday, January 11. More specific information will be sent to those required to test.

Face Covering Requirement
All community members are required to wear a face covering while indoors (i.e. Gander Dining Hall, the Library, classrooms, common areas in residence halls, etc.). Recent studies suggest surgical and N95 disposable masks are more effective than cloth masks at protecting people from COVID-19, particularly the highly contagious Omicron variant. While a cloth mask is acceptable, we are encouraging the Maryville community to obtain either surgical or N95 masks for their superior fit and ability to filter out virus particles.

Vaccination Policy
As a reminder, Maryville expects all faculty, staff, and students to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and submit proof via our Vaccination Reporting Form. Following recommendations from the CDC, Maryville strongly encourages all community members to get a booster shot as soon as you are eligible and submit proof via our Vaccination Reporting Form. Health agencies continue to state that getting vaccinated including a booster remains the best defense against all COVID-19 variants.

COVID-19 Mitigation Protocols
Students who are fully vaccinated will be required to:

  • Wear a face covering while indoors
  • Complete the health screening survey if they develop COVID-19 symptoms or have a positive COVID-19 test result

Students who are not fully vaccinated will be required to:

  • Complete a COVID-19 test before returning to campus for the spring semester
  • Complete a minimum of weekly COVID-19 tests throughout the academic year at Huttig Chapel
  • Complete a daily health screening survey
  • Wear a face covering when indoors and outdoors when physical distance cannot be maintained

Non-compliance for testing or completing the daily health survey may result in disciplinary action, including immediate removal from campus.

Vaccination Availability
Vaccinations (including primary and booster shots) are also available on an ongoing basis by appointment. You can make an appointment by calling 314-529-9520 or emailing healthandwellness@maryville.edu.

Testing, Contract Tracing, Quarantine and Isolation
Maryville will continue to offer COVID-19 testing and coordinate contact tracing through the Health and Wellness Office. We will also continue to follow CDC and St. Louis County guidelines for quarantine and isolation related to COVID-19 exposure and infection. To help support the uninterrupted academic success of students who are in quarantine and isolation, Maryville plans to continue to offer students the ability to join classes by Zoom during periods of quarantine and isolation as directed by the Health and Wellness Office.

Depending upon availability of quarantine and isolation space, residential students may be directed to complete quarantine and isolation at home.

In line with CDC guidance, Maryville strongly recommends all unvaccinated students quarantine for seven to ten days after travel, international or domestic. Maryville also strongly recommends all students returning from international travel, regardless of vaccination status, get tested for COVID-19 at Maryville’s Health and Wellness Office three to five days after returning.

Check out SaintStrong for ways to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in different spaces on campus. Like last semester, Maryville will periodically review its approach to campus mitigation measures and may revise its policies and plans if needed.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Dr. Nina Caldwell
