Smoke-Free Policy

Purpose: Maryville University is committed to providing a healthy, comfortable, and productive work and learning environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Scope: This policy applies to faculty, staff, students, contractor and consultant employees, performers, visitors, and the general public on the main campus. This policy is implemented in accordance with any municipal or county ordinances.

Definition: For the purposes of this policy, smoking is the inhaling, exhaling, burning, or carrying of any lighted or heated cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookahs, water pipes, or other tobacco products.

Smoking is prohibited on all University property, including all buildings, outdoor spaces, and in University-owned or leased vehicles. Smoking is only permitted in personal vehicles.

Smoking is also prohibited at all off-site campus locations owned or leased by the University.

Administrators, faculty members, staff, students, contractors, applicants, and visitors (collectively the “University Community”) are responsible for complying with this policy. The University expects that both smokers and non-smokers will cooperate in adhering to this policy in an atmosphere of mutual respect and consideration. The University strongly encourages all community members to promote compliance with this policy by reminding others that Maryville is a smoke-free campus. Repeat offenders can be reported to Human Resources or the Dean of Students Office for appropriate action. Any community member that knowingly violates any University policy may be subject to disciplinary action.
For individuals who want to reduce or quit smoking, there are many programs available. Visit the Maryville University Health and Wellness Office or the United States Department of Health and Human Services at smokefree.gov.
