Smoking Policy

Maryville University is committed to providing a healthy, comfortable and productive work and learning environment for all students, faculty, staff and visitors. Maryville is a smoke-free campus. Smoking is prohibited on all University property, including all buildings, outdoor spaces and in University-owned or leased vehicles. Smoking is permitted in personal vehicles that are parked on campus. This policy applies to faculty, staff, students, contractor and consultant employees, performers, visitors and the general public on the main campus.

Off-site campus locations shall continue to prohibit all smoking within buildings and shall also comply with any local municipality or county restrictions.
Definition – Smoking is the burning, lighting or use of a tobacco product and any other smoking device or equipment that includes, but is not limited to traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, hookahs or water pipes, cigars, marijuana and pipes.

Compliance with the smoke-free policy will be expected. Anyone who observes that the policy is being violated is encouraged to bring it to the attention of the smoker. In the event that any individual is found to regularly violate the University’s smoke-free policy, for employees, the issue will be referred to Human Resources, or for students, to the Student Life Office for appropriate action. Violations of this policy will be subject to rules and sanctions and may result in disciplinary action.
