Nursing Program Receives $4.7 Million Grant
2/15/10
The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded Maryville University a three-year, $4.7 million grant to expand its nursing education program, beginning with the fall 2010 semester. While helping the nursing industry recover from critical shortages in both service and teaching staff, the funding will also provide targeted employment relief in the greater St. Louis area.
The multi-faceted program is designed to provide job opportunities and new career options for displaced and unemployed people, as well as provide education and certification for current health care workers who seek greater job mobility.
In implementing the program, designed as a Weekend and Evening College initiative, Maryville University will work in strategic partnership with St. Luke’s Hospital, RehabCare, St. Louis County Human Services Workforce Development and SSM Health Care St. Louis.
“The grant will expand our already outstanding nursing program so that many more can benefit from our talented faculty,” said President Mark Lombardi, PhD. “This university-health care- corporate partnership is a model for improving and expanding health care access and quality. Maryville is proud to lead this effort.”
Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the grant will defray part of the cost of tuition, transportation and child care or dependent care for:
• workers who want to attain a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN)
• RNs who want to complete the BSN
• workers who want to complete the Certificate in Rehabilitation Nursing (post-baccalaureate program) or complete introductory training in Rehabilitation Nursing
“The Weekend and Evening College format of this program will help working adults – many of whom might not otherwise have this opportunity – pursue a nursing degree or gain greater career mobility,” said Elizabeth Buck, PhD, director of the nursing program.
Along with tuition assistance, the grant also provides for additional faculty, administrative support positions and funding for lab and teleconferencing equipment. Nursing education programs funded by this grant will be held in classrooms and labs on the campus of Maryville University, as well as in a newly-enhanced nursing lab at St. Luke’s Hospital.
