St. Louis – The Maryville University men’s basketball team will appear on national television in 2013-14. CBS College Sports announced today it will televise the Saints game at defending national champion Drury on Saturday, Jan. 25. The Great Lakes Valley Conference tilt starts at 11 a.m. in the O’Reilly Family Event Center in Springfield, Mo.
“It is an honor to have the CBS College Sports Network pick our game for national television,” Saints Head Coach Kevin Carroll said. “This will be a wonderful showcase for Maryville University, our basketball program and our outstanding student-athletes.”
Maryville University Athletics Director Marcus Manning said the nationally televised game provides an avenue to showcase the University, highlight the unprecedented success under President Mark Lombardi’s leadership, feature Kevin Carroll, a rising star in the coaching ranks, and Maryville’s student-athletes. I’m sure our campus community, alums, and fans share in our excitement. Many thanks to Drury’s Director of Athletics Pat Atwell and the CBS College Sports Network for giving Maryville University this opportunity,” Manning said.
Last season, the Saints set a school record for wins as they posted a 23-9 record, 12-6 in the GLVC. Maryville broke the DII school mark for conference wins, was the GLVC West Division runner up and posted the program’s first win over a national-ranked team, No. 4 Bellarmine. The Saints return nine of their top 10 scorers from last year, including honorable mention All-America senior guard Asa Toney.
The Drury Panthers won the 2013 Division II national championship with a thrilling 74-73 comeback win over Metro State and finished 31-4 last year. Maryville begins its season with an exhibition game at home against Blackburn Nov. 7.
