Maryville University has announced a partnership with National City, now a part of PNC, in bringing well-known economist Robert Reich to the region as a featured guest in the St. Louis Speakers Series. Reich will speak at 8 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2010, at Powell Symphony Hall.

Now in its 12th season, the Maryville University St. Louis Speakers Series is held from fall through spring. The Series features influential and celebrated guests for seven informative and entertaining evenings.

“National City is proud to support the St. Louis Speaker Series. This series of lectures provides intellectual enrichment to St. Louis audiences through presentations from some of the most prominent figures of our time,” said Rick Sems, president of National City, Missouri Banking, now a part of PNC Financial Services Group. “National City is honored to partner with Maryville University in bringing Robert Reich, one of the nation’s leading economists, to the Greater St. Louis area.”

Upcoming St. Louis Speakers Series guests also include: Pervez Musharraf, former president of Pakistan, on Oct. 1; Jean-Michel Cousteau – explorer, environmentalist, educator, documentary film producer and president of Ocean Futures Society – Oct. 27; Laura Bush, former first lady of the United States and advocate for global literacy and human rights, Nov. 24; Mia Farrow, iconic film star and advocate for humanitarian efforts with UNICEF and in Darfur, Feb. 9; Tom Friedman, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of The World is Flat and two other books, April 6; and Greg Mortenson, co-founder of the Central Asia Institute and author of the New York Times best-seller, Three Cups of Tea, April 20.

Having served in the Ford, Carter, Clinton and now Obama administrations, Reich is well-regarded as one of the nation’s leading thinkers on business, labor and the economy. As U.S. secretary of labor, he worked to pass the Retirement Protection and Family Medical Leave Acts, and increased the minimum wage for hourly workers.
