Lewington becomes president of business honor society

The Associate Dean of Maryville University’s business school, John Lewington, PhD, has been chosen as the new president of Delta Mu Delta, an international honor society in business.
The Brookfield, Ill.-based society recognizes academically distinguished students and faculty and business leaders who have experienced measurable success in their professions. Lewington has served on the Delta Mu Delta board for seven years. He began his term as president in November and will continue through the organization’s centennial conference in San Antonio, Texas, in 2013.
Lewington, professor of marketing in the John E. Simon School of Business, encourages Maryville University undergraduate and graduate students to strive for inclusion in Delta Mu Delta. He notes many University alumni from business administration programs are members. “It’s a recognition of excellence, only 1 in 5 is eligible, the top 20 percent of any graduating class,” he says. An initial fee to join the honor society provides lifetime membership. Job seekers can include their membership on a resume; the honor society provides online networking opportunities, and membership can fulfill one requirement for a certain level of federal service jobs.
Across the nation, there are about 7,000 students inducted into Delta Mu Delta annually in nearly 300 chapters, Lewington says. Other countries often have not had the same tradition of honor societies as a way to recognize academic success, Lewington notes. However, the organization is growing and extending its reach internationally.
The Delta Mu Delta Honor Society was founded in 1913 by five faculty from Harvard University, Yale University and New York University. In 1963, it was admitted to the Association of College Honor Societies, an organization to develop and maintain honor society standards and increase honor society usefulness. In 1992, Delta Mu Delta affiliated with the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs.
