The seventh edition of Magnolia, Maryville’s annual art and literary publication edited and designed by students, is now available. Works of photography, prose, poetry and art created by students, faculty, staff and alumni are featured.

“We had a common purpose of giving back to the Maryville community and giving something that represents the creative spirit of Maryville. We have something really special here,” said co-editor Alicia Trebus, sophomore English major.

The Magnolia editorial staff also included Michelle Lawrence, co-editor; Amanda Gertner, assistant to the editors; Tyler Pey, graphic designer/cover designer; and Alex Riggio, graphic designer/layout designer. Germaine Murray, PhD, professor of English, serves as faculty adviser.

“We had a lot of great submissions and it was harder than it sounds to choose from them,” said Lawrence, a sophomore double-majoring in English and communication.

The magazine cover is hand set and letterpress printed by Maryville alumna Johanna Shipley, of Laughing Bird Studio in Illinois.

“Johanna operates one of only three letterpresses in the nation and each cover is completely unique,” Trebus said.

Both Lawrence and Shipley will return as editors next year.  They plan to publish an online, complimentary version of Magnolia for the next edition.

“That will allow us to showcase digital submissions, including prose pieces that run longer, videos, music and design works,” Lawrence said. “I’m excited about that because there is a lot more art available.”

Complimentary copies of Magnolia may be picked up at University Library, the University Bookstore, the College of Arts and Sciences main office and the Art & Design Building. A reception for the new edition is planned for next fall.
