Good teaching is a calling associated with the effective, respectful communication between the teacher and students resulting in the development of the students through acquisition of shared knowledge. I believe building rapport with each student is important for creating a positive learning environment where ideally every student has a voice. Since the teacher should be a role model in all aspects of behavior, adhering to high ethical standards contributes to the trusting relationships not only in a classroom but in all interactions with the students. Addressing the students by name, asking them questions, and the teacher actively listening and using humor in class further builds the supportive environment. Keeping current in one’s field and going beyond the call of duty to assist students in their learning are just a couple of examples of good teaching.
