As the year ends, her students showed their gratitude by nominating Ellis-Kalton for the 2007 Maryville Student Government Student Organization Advisor Of The Year Award, an award she received April 27 at the Student Life Recognition Banquet.
“I was truly touched by the nomination and am so very proud that together, as a team, the students, (assistant professor of psychology) Dr. Bobbi Carothers (right) and I have worked to create and develop this new, amazing organization,” said Ellis-Kalton, who is completing her first year as a Maryville faculty member. Ellis-Kalton said she was impressed by the students’ desire to launch a new organization.
“At the first meeting, their overwhelming excitement and enthusiasm for a club dedicated to their interests and goals was apparent and inspiring,” she remarked. “From electing their officers, to designing their all-important t-shirts, they were passionate about making the Psyc/Soc club ‘their own.’ It’s this spark that ignited and then continued to fuel the development of this new, exciting organization.” In their nomination letter, club members said Ellis-Kalton has been much more than an advisor.
“She will do everything she can to help her students succeed, both within and outside the club,” the letter stated. “She is always willing to give advice, feedback, praise and constructive criticism when necessary. She puts her students first.” Club members credit Ellis-Kalton for the success of the club-sponsored Maryville University Women’s Health and Well-Being Week, held in March. Serving as a club advisor has been a learning and rewarding experience, Ellis-Kalton said.
“We view our roles as guides, faciliators, resources and support for the students to lead, direct, decide, create,” she commented. “I am so proud of all that the organization accomplished in its first year and am truly excited to see what new experiences and adventures next year will bring for the Psyc/Soc club.” Ellis-Kalton noted she and Carothers plan to launch next fall a Maryville chapter of Psi Chi- the national honor society in psychology.
