Duo To Open 2007-08 Maryville Concert Series

ST. LOUIS — Peter Henderson and Kristin Ahlstrom have more in common then being husband and wife. They are also both musicians with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and on Sunday, Oct. 21, they will headline the opening concert of the 2007 Music at Maryville series, sponsored by Maryville University. The concert will be held at 3 p.m. in the University Auditorium.
Henderson is a pianist and an assistant professor of music at Maryville University. He has performed frequently as a keyboardist with the Symphony. Ahlstrom joined the Symphony in 1996 and was promoted to the associate principal second violin chair in 2001. They will perform, as a duet, works by Mozart, Lutoslawski and Strauss.
The Music At Maryville concert series is now in its 27th year. The series was founded in 1980 by Katja Georgieff, then director of Maryville’s music program, as a way of spotlighting classical music on the Maryville campus, and continues to attract internationally renowned, classically trained musicians. Through the years, the series, which started in Huttig Chapel and moved to the University Auditorium in 2001, has featured such talent as pianist Claude Frank, cellist Leslie Parnas, and St. Louis Symphony violinist David Halen and his wife, soprano Miran Halen.
Other dates in the 2007-2008 Music at Maryville concert series are:
• 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18 — The St. Louis Chamber Orchestra at Maryville University, directed by James Richards. The concert will feature Mozart’s Concerto #14 in E flat K.449, performed by award-winning recording artist, pianist Ingrid Jacoby.
• 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008 — The quartet of violinist David Halen, soprano Miran Halen, cellist Savely Schuster and pianist Katja Georgieff, professor emerita of music at Maryville University, will perform a concert of instrumental and vocal chamber music.
• 3 p.m., Sunday, March 16, 2008 — A special appearance by internationally renowned artist Eduardo Delgado, in a piano recital.
