A Maryville delegation of faculty toured China last May to study that country’s business climate, develop new opportunities for the university’s international growth, and to deliver lectures on current business topics.

“We were intent on discovering how a country preparing for its long-awaited Olympic ambitions had blended an illustrious history with a technological and economic revolution of truly spectacular proportions,” said John Lewington, Ph.D., professor of business.

Lewington was accompanied by faculty members Ping Deng, Ph.D., professor of business administration; Kim Temme, professor of accounting; Richard Kilgore, Ph.D., assistant professor of management and information systems; and Leah Schwartz, Ph.D., professor of English.

“In March, Maryville University hosted two groups of Chinese administrators and professors from Chongqing University and Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu as part of the president’s initiative to internationalize the campus and promote greater global reach,” Lewington said. “During our trip to China, we were able to meet them at their own universities, despite hurdles caused by the country’s major earthquake, which occurred one week before the Maryville contingent left St. Louis.”

In conjunction with the China trip, Deng, Temme and Kilgore presented lectures to students at Chongqing University. Deng conducted two sessions there, and also taught a course at the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics.
