Bertolino’s Book To Get Third Translation

ST. LOUIS – While writing The Therapist’s Notebook for Families: Solution-Oriented Exercises for Working with Parents, Children, and Adolescents, Bob Bertolino, Ph.D., assistant professor of rehabilitation counseling at Maryville University, never imagined the possibility of his book being published in three different languages. In addition to English and Korean, Bertolino’s book soon will be published in Hebrew.

“it is an honor to have my books translated,” Bertolino said. “A primary reason that I write is to share ideas with others. When something I have poured so much of myself into is able to reach a larger audience, it is a wonderful feeling. Through these translations, I feel like I have a greater degree of connection with others.” Bertolino said he often receives e-mails from people in other countries. He is grateful they are able to share not only their experiences but also a renewed sense of hope that comes with his books.

“The book… includes 70 exercises that therapists can use with families in sessions, offer as exercises to engage in outside of therapy, or for therapists to complete on their own,” said Bertolino. Gary Schultheis, a social worker from Indiana, helped Bertolino write the therapy book that was published in 2002 by the Haworth Press, which is now an imprint of Taylor & Francis. Bertolino said his publisher has the right to decide when the book will be translated. “I don’t typically push for translations, although I often meet people during my travels who express interest in acquiring the rights to translate a work of mine. I then put them in touch with the publisher,” he said.

Bertolino has authored or co-authored nine books, all dealing with some aspect of rehabilitation counseling. Most focus on his specialties of substance abuse, family therapy, and working with adolescents. Bertolino’s book Therapy with Troubled Teenagers has been published in English, Finnish and Chinese, while the book Change-Oriented Therapy with Adolescents and Young Adults has been published in English and Spanish.
