Pre-Med – Careers

What Can I Do With A Pre-Med Degree?

Physicians and surgeons have demanding education and training requirements. With an undergraduate degree in pre-medicine, candidates for an MD degree then complete four years of medical school and depending on their specialty, three to eight years in internship and residency programs.

For students interested in osteopathic medicine, Maryville has an agreement with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Penn. that allows students to pursue their medical degree after three years at Maryville. These students will earn a B.S. in biology from Maryville and a D.O. from Lake Erie College.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, wages for physicians and surgeons are among the highest of all occupations and vary with the type of practice. In 2012 the median annual compensation for primary care practitioners was $220,942 with specialties earning a median annual wage of $396,233.
