Biology – Program Features
The Biology program prepares majors to begin a professional career in the life sciences. Agriculture, wildlife management, forestry, the food industry, the drug and pharmacy industries, public health and environmental protection all provide career opportunities for biologists. The program offers excellent preparation for professional studies in biotechnology, medicine, pharmacy, as well as for pre-law programs in environmental and health regulatory law. Participation in undergraduate research is strongly encouraged.
In addition to a B.S. degree in Biology with a concentration in Sustainability, Maryville also offers a minor in Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship for those who wish to major in other fields, but recognize the importance of sustainability in all areas of life. This minor emphasizes the links between human choices and environmental effects and focuses on experiential learning, interdisciplinary approaches, and community outreach. The minor requires a minimum of 8 courses (4 required and 4 electives) for a total of 24-28 credit hours. Elective courses should be chosen in consultation with the student’s academic adviser.
Nowhere is the value of a biology degree more valuable than in St. Louis, which has become a world-class center for plant and life sciences research and development. More than 15,000 people are employed in 400 plant and life sciences companies and organizations. Employers such as Pfizer, Monsanto and the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center are conducting world-class research, right here in St. Louis. You could be one of them.
Professional PartnershipsMaryville is proud to work with numerous corporate and civic organizations in St. Louis and beyond through partnerships created in support of our academic programs and student opportunities. The list of the University's partners is long, impressive, and ever expanding: Rawlings, Mercy, St. Louis Public Schools, Parkway School District, Edward Jones, Northwestern Mutual, RGA, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, and Maritz, just to name a few. Our partners provide students with opportunities to experience hands-on involvement in real-world projects, requiring them to hone market-ready skills even before they graduate. Students also experience a variety of work environments and develop a network of industry contacts through these partnerships, so Maryville graduates often have a competitive edge in the job market. In fact, many of our partners provide valuable internships—which can lead to full-time jobs with the firm or agency.
