Leadership Development Opportunities

The Keith Lovin Institute for Leadership and Values (KLILV) is Maryville University's only comprehensive leadership development program.  Each year up to a maximum of 20 freshmen (or sophomores if you expect to be at Maryville for at least four more years) are inducted into the institute in order to engage in three years of leadership development via:  classes, conferences, workshops, presentations, community service, and starting in 2011 an opportunity to travel abroad.

The goal of the institute is to help you develop the leadership skills you will need in your professional careers.  We believe that the best opportunity to learn, develop, and practice these skills are during your academic career when you can reflect and learn from trial and error.  We help you accomplish this by providing you with the opportunity to practice what you learn in a safe environment followed by constructive feedback so that you can understand what went well and what did not so that the next time you perform better than the previous attempt.

This comprehensive experience begins right away as you start to work toward becoming one of the 20 students that are inducted.  You will begin by spending a year attending our SKILL Seminars.  SKILL Seminars are created and presented by current Junior and Senior Fellows of KLILV with the goal of providing students with an opportunity to learn about a skill or important topic and put it into practice or discussion.  The format of these workshops are typically a presentation, followed by an activity or discussion.  During this year, you will be asked to attend 8 SKILL Seminars in order to apply to become a Fellow of KLILV.  We also ask that applicants have a 3.0 GPA or better and participate in community service independently or through university sponsored opportunities.  Finally, in order to be a strong candidate, it is strongly recommended that you have campus involvement through a student organization, university department, or other university-related activity.

During the second year (your first as an official Fellow), there will be a primary focus on community service leadership through actual participation and class presentations.  Your third year will consist of a primary focus on leadership ethics and values, highlighted by a course taught by Maryville University's president.  Finally, during your senior year you have the opportunity to take everything you learned and lead three Leadership Legacies.  This can include hosting a benefit concert, proposing and defending a university policy change, starting a new student organization, or any other idea that will make an impact on campus.  Basically, this is your chance to shine!

When you are ready to graduate, you will have the skills and confidence to make an impact in your profession and community immediately because you will have already made an impact at Maryville University.  A graduating Fellow will have accomplished the following:

  • Built their leadership skill set
  • Particpated and led community service efforts
  • Developed and practiced public speaking skills
  • Interacted with university officials up to and including the president
  • Built a strong network of contacts
  • And possibly have studied abroad! (Starting in 2011)

Below is a quote from Alexi Riggio when she was first inducted into the Keith Lovin Institute for Leadership and Values
