Quintets for Piano and Strings - Concert

March 15, 2010

As part of a continuing informal series of free classical music concerts on campus, Maryville University presents, "Quintets for Piano and Strings," at 7 p.m., Monday, March 15, in the University Auditorium. The program features quintets for piano and strings by Erno Dohnányi and Walter Piston.

Peter Henderson, DM, assistant professor of music and frequent pianist with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, will join with friends from the Saint Louis Symphony, including Emily Ho and Kristin Ahlstrom, violins; Shannon Farrell Williams, viola; and Anne Fagerburg, cello. They will play two Quintets for piano and strings in contrasting styles.

Dohnányi's Piano Quintet, op.1, is a Romantic work in a grand, symphonic style with several big, memorable tunes.  The Piano Quintet, composed in 1949 by American composer Piston, features rugged, active rhythms.
