Quintets for Piano and Strings

The program features quintets for piano and strings by Erno Dohnányi and Walter Piston, performed by pianist Peter Henderson and friends from the Saint Louis Symphony. Featured musicians are Emily Ho & Kristin Ahlstrom, violins; Shannon Farrell Williams, viola; and Anne Fagerburg, cello. They will play two quintets for piano and strings in contrasting styles.
Dohnányi's Piano Quintet,
op.1, is a Romantic work in a grand, symphonic style with several big, memorable tunes.
The Piano Quintet, composed in 1949 by American composer Piston, features rugged, active rhythms.
Sonatas for Cello and Piano and for Piano Solo

American composer Samuel Barber is most famous for his frequently heard
Adagio for Strings. Barber's cello and piano sonatas feature his trademark neo-Romantic lyricism and structural integrity. The works will be performed by Bjorn Ranheim, cello, and Peter Henderson, piano.
