Literacy Workshop

Maryville University will host a literacy workshop, "Motivating Struggling Readers through Integrating Phonics, Fluency, Comprehension and Authentic Text," from 3-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, in the Monsanto Room of University Library. Keynote speaker Timothy Rasinski, PhD, professor of literacy education at Kent State University, will lead a highly interactive session on motivating young readers.

This advanced workshop is designed for elementary, middle school and high school teachers who encounter struggling readers. The workshop is co-sponsored by Carla Nieman, publisher representative for Booksource.

Timothy Rasinski is the author of more than 150 articles and has written, co-written or edited more than 15 books or curriculum programs on reading education. His scholarly interests include reading fluency and word study, reading in the elementary and middle grades, and readers who struggle. Rasinski, past president of the College Reading Association, is a recipient of A.B. Herr Award for academic work in literacy education and currently serves as the co-editor of the Journal of Literacy Research.
