Project-Based Learning

Students who wish to teach English at the high school level (grades 9-12) enter the secondary teacher preparation program. The program involves extensive professional education courses with a strong grounding in content area coursework.  All teacher preparation programs also involve extensive experiences in partner schools.

Close supervision provided by Maryville’s professors along with the well-established relationships with schools throughout the region help our students develop their philosophy of teaching and hone their skills in real classroom settings.

In addition to a bachelor’s degree in secondary English education, a number of other options are available within the program including: double major with English education and English; an accelerated program leading to master’s degrees in Reading/Literacy Education, or Gifted Education.

Through field placements and award-winning assignments, student will be exposed to different cultures to be prepared for a variety of settings.

Maryville’s secondary education program has a reputation for preparing quality teachers who are committed to helping each child reach their full potential.

Professional Partnerships

Maryville is proud to work with numerous corporate and civic organizations in St. Louis and beyond through partnerships created in support of our academic programs and student opportunities. The list of the University's partners is long, impressive, and ever expanding: Rawlings, Mercy, St. Louis Public Schools, Parkway School District, Edward Jones, Northwestern Mutual, RGA, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, and Maritz, just to name a few. Our partners provide students with opportunities to experience hands-on involvement in real-world projects, requiring them to hone market-ready skills even before they graduate. Students also experience a variety of work environments and develop a network of industry contacts through these partnerships, so Maryville graduates often have a competitive edge in the job market. In fact, many of our partners provide valuable internships—which can lead to full-time jobs with the firm or agency.
