CIVITAS

The Center for Civic Engagement and Democracy is the coordinating site for a CIVITAS  International Program partnership.  The Maryville partnership includes US partners in three states (Alabama Center for Law and Civic Education, Missouri Bar and the University of Toledo, Ohio) and four international partners (Moroccan Center for Civic Education-Morocco, Center for Citizenship Education, Warsaw-Poland, Center for Community and Educational Development-South Africa, and the Center for Civic Education “NOVA DOBA”-Ukraine). Together the partnership seeks to conduct projects that consider best practice and research on civic education for democracy. A primary activity of the project is the annual exchange of educators and educational leaders between partnership sites to engage in professional development, research and teaching about democratic citizenship.  Funding for the CIVITAS project is through a subcontract from the Center for Civic Education based on funds from the U.S. Department of Education under the Education for Democracy Act approved by the United States Congress; additional support is provided by the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and other sources.
