Maryville Splits with Hendrix, Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS-- The Maryville University women's tennis team split with non-conference opponents in a doubleheader Saturday. To start the day, the Saints narrowly fell to Hendrix College in a 5-4 loss.

Newcomer Chelsea Travis (Ballwin, Mo.) won 9-7at No. 1 singles. Teammate Erinne Haff (Jackson, Mo.) won 8-6 at No.2. Senior Cari Ranck (Indianapolis, Ind.) defeated her opponent in singles play at the No. 4 spot.

Freshman Victoria Roberson (Ballwin, Mo.) fell 9-7 in a touch match at No. 3 singles. Anne Kilian (Crystal City, Mo.) and junior Anna Hindelang (Grafton, Ill.) both lost 8-3 at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.

In doubles competition, the freshman duo of Travis and Haff won 8-1 at the No. 1 spot. Roberson and Cari lost 8-6 at the No. 2 spot. At No. 3 doubles, Kilian and Hindelang lost 8-1 to their Warriors opponent.

The second match of the day proved to be better for Maryville. The Saints shut out Fontbonne University with a 9-0 win, which marked its second shutout victory of the week. The Saints defeated Blackburn 9-0 Monday.

In singles competition, Travis won her match 8-2 at the No. 1 spot, while Haff defeated her opponent 8-1 at No. 2 singles. Roberson and Hindelang shut out their competition 8-0 at spots No. 3 and No. 6 respectively.

Ranck won her match at No. 4 singles with a 8-2 win. Killian finished with a victory with a 8-1 win at the No. 5 spot.

The Saints finished strong in doubles play. At No. 1 doubles, Travis and Haff won 8-0. Roberson and Ranck combined for an 8-2 win at the No. 2 spot. Sophomore Karen Swarm joined Kilian for another point in an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
