Women's Tennis Blanks Blackburn
ST. LOUIS-- The Maryville University women's tennis team opened the spring season with a 9-0 win over non-conference opponent Blackburn College Monday. The Saints recorded their first shutout win since their match against Fontbonne University back on March 27, 2009.
In singles competition, freshman Chelsea Travis (Ballwin, Mo.) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Fellow freshman Erinne Haff (Jackson, Mo.) won 6-4, 6-2 at the No.2 spot.
Haff continued her solid game play into doubles competition. Travis and Haff proved unstoppable as they won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Freshman Victoria Roberson (Ballwin, Mo) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while senior Cari Ranck (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded the same score at the No. 4 spot. Teammates Anne Kilian (Crystal City, Mo.) and junior Anna Hindeland (Grafton, Ill.) were also victorious and won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.
In doubles competition, duo Roberson and Ranck won 8-0 at the No. 2 spot, while sophomores Karen Schwarm (Vandalia, Ill.) and Kilian posted a matching score at the No. 3 spot.
Maryville returns to the courts Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader at Shaw Park (St. Louis). Match 1 against Hendrix College is scheduled for 1 p.m. and match 2 against Fontbonne University is scheduled for 5 p.m.
