2008 Men's and Women's Soccer Teams Named NSCAA College Team Academic Award Winners
KANSAS CITY, Kan.—The Maryville University men's and women's 2008 soccer squads were named NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) College Team Academic Award winners the national office announced today.
575 teams (143 men and 332 women) had a team GPA of 3.0 or higher which met the qualification of this award.
Of the 575 squads, 99 schools had both its men's and women's teams recognized. Maryville was one of these 99 institutions.
The men's squad compiled a team GPA of 3.1 under first-year head coach Todd Wallace.
"I am very proud of this team and their commitment to excelling on the soccer field and in the classroom," stated Wallace. "Maryville demands the very best from their students and the men's soccer team is no exception. These young men have displayed a tremendous resolve to work just as hard in the classroom as they did on the soccer field."
Amherst College and Mount Union College led all men's team honorees with its 3.47 GPA.
The women's team tallied a team GPA of 3.5 under tenth-year head coach Eric Delabar.
"This is an outstanding achievement for the women's soccer team at Maryville University," said Delabar. "This is a testament to the type of student athlete that chooses Maryville to continue their academic and athletic careers: intelligent, hard working, focused and most importantly, they possess the ability to balance the challenge of college athletics while maintaining excellence in the classroom."
Central Michigan University led all squads with its 3.73 GPA.
Two other SLIAC (St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) schools, Principia and Webster had both squads recognized.
