Maryville Baseball Team to be Honored at National Sportsmanship Awards
The 2009 Maryville University baseball team.
The Saints are being honored for their true demonstration of teamwork with raising funds for their teammate, Tyler Schmitz, whose family's home was destroyed by a fire in early February 2009. To help his family get back on their feet financially, Schmitz decided not to play his senior season and took on two jobs and an internship in addition to his full time class schedule at Maryville.
Through their efforts, the team raised enough funds and University officials granted Schmitz free tuition for that semester, which allowed him to scale back to just one job in addition to school and was able to return to the diamond in a Saints uniform. He posted a 1-1 record in nine relief appearances.
The Maryville baseball team is one of 18 recipients at the 2009 National Sportsmanship Awards.
This evening will be aired on the College Sports Network in December.
