Maryville University Director of Athletics, Tony Duckworth, announced today that Kevin Carroll has been named the new head men's basketball coach.
"I am very humbled and extremely excited to be the new men's basketball coach at Maryville University," said Carroll. "I am grateful to have the opportunity to build a program in one of the top NCAA Division II conferences for basketball in the nation."
The Chattanooga, Tenn. native comes to Maryville from the Air Force Academy, an NCAA Division I institution, where he was assistant coach.
"I am very excited that Kevin Carroll has agreed to become the head men's basketball coach at Maryville University," said Duckworth. "During the past two months, Maryville sought a new head coach who is a fit for Maryville, has experience and knowledge running a college basketball program, values the student-athlete experience, is a proven recruiter and a coach who is ready for the challenges of building a successful program in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Coach Carroll embodies all the characteristics we sought in this search."
Carroll was an assistant coach for the past three seasons at the Air Force Academy and the Falcons qualified for the Mountain West Conference tournament and advanced as far as the quarterfinals each year.
During his tenure, he also coached two Mountain West All-Conference selections, three Academic All-Conference honorees and one MWC Defensive Player of the Year.
Prior to his time at Air Force, Carroll served as the top assistant coach at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, an NCAA Division II institution, from 2006-07. While there, he helped the Chargers to an 18-11 record and an appearance at the Gulf South Conference tournament.
Carroll served as the head coach of St. Pius X High School in Atlanta, Ga. for three seasons prior to UAH. While there, he was turned around the program and established Pius as one of the premier high school programs in the state and recorded a 49-38 record in his three years.
After the Blue Lions won only six games in 2004-05, Carroll's second team improved its win total to 19 games and advanced to the second round of the state tournament. The 2005-06 squad set a number of school records including tying the record for wins (24) and advanced to the Elite 8 and the second region championship in the program's 49-year history.
In Carroll's final two seasons at St. Pius X, the Blue Lions defeated ten ranked teams, including AAAA's top-ranked team in the 2006 regional finals.
Carroll earned his bachelor's degree in math education from Berry College in Rome, Ga. in 2000. He was a four-year member of the men's basketball team and helped guide the Vikings to three consecutive 20-win seasons. Carroll received the TranSouth Conference Scholar-Athlete Award for his efforts on the court and in the classroom his senior year. He earned his master's degree in health sciences from the University of Alabama in 2002.
Ryan Hart
Assistant Coach

ST. LOUIS-Maryville University head men's basketball coach, Kevin Carroll, announced today that Ryan Hart has been named an assistant coach for the men's basketball program.
"We are very excited to have Ryan join our staff here at Maryville," said Carroll. "His work ethic made a great impression on me and his combination of energy, personality and knowledge will have an immediate impact on our program. Ryan's experiences at Eastern Kentucky and Drake, two highly successful Division I programs, will be a tremendous asset for us as we continue to develop our program's culture. Ryan is an exceptional addition for our program and to the Maryville University community."
Hart comes to Maryville from Eastern Kentucky University, an NCAA Division I institution, where he served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the past two seasons. He was ranked No. 15 in the nation among Director of Basketball Operations in the 2009 The College Bound Hoops rankings. The Colonels ranked in the top ten among NCAA Division I programs in three categories: three-point field goals made per game (2nd, 10.0), assist-to-turnover ratio (2nd, +1.63) and fewest turnovers per game (3rd, 9.6). EKU also set a McBrayer Arena record with 19 consecutive home victories, the sixth longest streak in the nation and the program record for home wins (15) and regular season victories (20).
He previously served as a graduate assistant at Drake University, also a Division I school, for two seasons.
Hart earned a Master's Degree in Public Administration: Executive Development from Drake and his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Midland Lutheran College.
"I'm very excited and humbled in joining the Maryville athletic family," stated Hart. "Coach Carroll has a great basketball mind and a strong, successful history of coaching basketball and therefore, am thrilled to be a member of his staff.
"In addition, Maryville University has many positive qualities and a strong academic focus which will really help during the recruiting process," he continued. "I look forward to building a basketball program that players, alumni and the entire University will be proud to support."
Tim Plyler
Assistant Coach
Tim Plyler enters his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Saints men's basketball program. Plyler will also serve as the head junior varsity coach.
Plyler comes to Maryville from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala., where he served as an assistant men's basketball coach for the Hawks in 2006-07. In addition to being the recruiting coordinator, he also served as the head junior varsity coach.
Prior to Huntingdon, Plyler spent time as a student-assistant coach at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn. While at Free-Hardeman he assisted with recruiting efforts, in-practice and in-game coaching and also film exchange. Plyler also brings a wealth of experience after working numerous summer basketball camps, including the UCLA Bruin Basketball Camp in 2006 and 2007.
Plyler, who will also serve as the Saints head men's and women's tennis coach, is a 2006 graduate of Free-Hardeman University where he earned a degree in business administration. He and his wife, Beth, reside in St. Charles, Mo.
Andrew Chesney
Graduate Assistant
Andrew Chesney enters his first season with the Maryville Men's Basketball program.
Chesney graduated from the University of North Alabama in Florence, Ala. in 2009 where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with a minor in Biology.
Chesney was a member of the Lions team that advanced to the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Elite Eight in the 2007-08 season. He was the third-leading scorer on the squad in his senior season and averaged 13.0 PPG.
Chesney also attended Wallace Community College in Hanceville, Ala. and Palm Beach Community College in Lake Worth, Fla.
He compiled a 93-35 record in his college career as a player.
Chesney also worked worked a variety of college basketball camps during the past four summers.
