The purpose of the psychology program is to provide students with a grasp of the guiding psychological principles of human behavior.  Course work falls into three broad categories: a clinical/counseling
concentration; a social/experimental concentration; and a developmental concentration. Students are free to choose courses within each of these three categories to fulfill the requirements for the major. The program emphasizes applied career-related experiences as well as a foundation in the broad theoretical issues of contemporary psychology. Course work and Practicum experiences are also designed to develop in students an enhanced social awareness, an appreciation of individual differences and a sense of social responsibility.

Maryville's psychology program is designed to offer prospective students excellent preparation for graduate study. Toward this end, the psychology program at Maryville has established a number of bridges to various graduate programs. Graduate bridge programs offer accelerated courses of study leading to a masters degree. These programs permit qualified majors in psychology to begin working on a master's degree while they are still completing their undergraduate requirements. Students who attend summer sessions can complete their graduate work in about a year beyond their senior year at Maryville.

Graduate Bridge Programs

Rehabilitation Counseling Bridge - Psychology majors with a concentration in rehabilitation counseling may, with special permission, take graduate courses in the Rehabilitation Counseling Program at Maryville during their senior year, thus reducing course requirements when they enter the masters program in Rehabilitation Counseling.

Elementary Education Bridge - Qualified psychology majors may apply for admission to the Elementary Education Bridge Program during the fall of their junior year. Students complete a program of combined course work in psychology and education at the undergraduate level and then, during the fifth year, complete the requirements for Master of Arts in Elementary Education and for certification to teach the elementary grades in the public school system.

Business Bridge - This program is available to qualified Maryville seniors majoring in either psychology. Students admitted to the Business Bridge Program may take up to 12 graduate credits in place of 12 undergraduate credits, with these credits applying toward both the baccalaureate and master's degree.

The demand for highly trained personnel in the human services field is increasing dramatically. Graduates in psychology are prepared for entry-level positions throughout the social service, health and government sectors. Examples include:

Child Welfare Investigator

Personnel and Human Resource Management

Group/Peer Support Facilitator

Marketing Research

The undergraduate program in psychology offers a concentration in rehabilitation to prepare students for careers working in rehabilitation agencies/organizations as well as independent living centers. Students in this field work with individuals that have various disabilities, including those with physical, psychiatric, developmental, visual or hearing, traumatic brain injury and substance abuse.
