Law schools seek students who possess strong communication, analytical and research skills. Specific courses of study are not required for admission to law schools, but most law schools do require a bachelors degree. A student considering law school should purse a selection of coursework that is challenging and which emphasizes research and writing skills. Law schools seek students who demonstrate an ability to challenge their thinking and reasoning skills and who have some understanding of what shapes the human experience. The major chosen is not an important as the quality of education received, but the course work should reflect the candidate's capacity to perform well at an academically rigorous level.

A broad liberal arts curriculum is the preferred preparation for students in pre-law.  Many students choose majors in legal studies, history, English or liberal studies with concentrations in political science or philosophy.

Stepping Stone to Law School

Maryville graduates have been accepted into some of the finest law schools in the country, including Columbia University, Georgetown University, Emory University, University of Illinois and Washington University.

Students interested in a pre-law program should seek information from the pre-law advisor at Maryville University, including information on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), grade point expectations, admission process and law school selection. Students interested in admission to Law School are encouraged to take the LSAT proprietary course Critical Thinking in Legal Analysis offered during the summer and fall term.

Maryville's program in Legal Studies provides still another avenue for preparation for law school.  Others my choose a major in business, especially if they wish to focus on a career in corporate law. Some students may select a major in environmental studies if they have an interest in environmental law.

The Degree for the Pre-Law student is in a selected major such as Legal Studies, Biology,
Chemistry, etc.  Pre-Law is a program, not a major.

Maryville's Pre-Professional Program advisers are committed to helping students arrange appropriate programs of study. Interested students should contact the office of the College of Arts and Science Programs for more information or to arrange a program.

While no one major is prescribed for admission to medical or dental school, strong preparation in the biological and natural sciences is generally recommended, along with a solid array of courses in the liberal arts.

Similarly, any liberal arts major that exercises the student's analytical reading, writing and critical thinking abilities can prepare a student for law school.
