Mathematics is an essential component of any liberal arts education, especially in the present age of technology. At Maryville the study of mathematics combines both practical and theoretical aspects. Placement tests designed by the Mathematical Association of America are administered through the Learning Center in order that each student may receive the best opportunity for learning according to one's background and career goals.

Curricula recommended by the Mathematical Association of America and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics are offered for those students interested in pursuing graduate work or working in industry or education.

Mathematics Education is designed for students planning teaching careers in secondary education. Students intending to enroll in Maryville's Master of Arts/Education/Secondary Teaching and Inquiry, based on an undergraduate major in mathematics, are advised to follow this track. Students should consult with the School of Education before scheduling their first semester.
