The Department of Mathematics and Actuarial Science offers a program of study leading to a Master’s of Science in Actuarial Science. This graduate program is designed to prepare students for careers as business executives professionally trained in the mathematical sciences and in financial risk evaluation. The advanced coursework and professional internship opportunities prepare students to pass the exams required to obtain the professional designation of Fellow by the Society of Actuaries (F.S.A.). Maryville actuarial students’ record of successful exam completion has consistently been among the best in the nation, with a 100% job placement rate for the program from 2002-2004.

The Maryville Master’s program in Actuarial Science is designed to accommodate professionals currently working in the field as well as students who have completed or are completing their undergraduate degree in actuarial science, mathematics, or related field.

Maryville University - Actuarial Science Program

Flexible Scheduling

The 12 required courses (36 credit hours) in the master’s program are spread across 4 semesters, with three courses taken each semester. Other time is spent in preparation for Society of Actuary exams and internship training. The program allows for possible completion in three semesters.

Courses generally meet for 32 hours, with all courses offered every year to accommodate first and second year graduate students.

Courses are offered mainly in the evening and weekend to accommodate part-time working students.  Courses offered jointly with undergraduate students are mainly in the day.

Full-time students take evening classes only one night per week.

The Accelerated Master's Option

A key feature of the program is that Maryville actuarial science undergraduates are able to complete both the undergraduate and graduate programs within 5 years. The undergraduate actuarial science curriculum is currently recognized by the Society of Actuaries as an “Advanced Undergraduate Curriculum.” The Accelerated Master’s option allows the undergraduate majoring in actuarial science to complete the master’s in only one additional year of study.

In the Accelerated Master’s option four courses (12 credits) taken during the senior year as part of the undergraduate curriculum count toward the master’s program, leaving just 24 credits remaining for the completion of the master’s degree.

Internships – Maryville’s AS program has strong working relationships with a variety of area employers. There were 22 paid internships in summer 2004, with interns paid an average salary of $15 per hour. Though internships do not guarantee jobs, they clearly open doors for many employment opportunities.

The Actuarial Exam System

The two major professional societies, the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuary Society, sponsor the actuarial exams necessary for the designation of Fellow. The graduate curriculum is carefully planned to prepare students for these exams.

Non-Degree Seeking Option for Actuarial Exams

Actuarial professionals may enroll in specific actuarial science classes to prepare for the series of professional actuarial exams. Students would be classified as non-degree seeking students for this purpose. Contact the Director of Mathematics and Actuarial Science for further information.

Actuarial Science as a Career

Actuaries are business executives who usually work in the context of health, life, and casualty insurance, where they design, analyze, and refine various programs to meet the insurance needs of society. Often called financial architects and social mathematicians, they combine analytical and business skills to solve a diverse and growing variety of financial and social problems. The actuarial profession is a demanding yet rewarding career choice.

The profession of actuary is consistently ranked among the top professions using criteria such as income, security, employment prospects, and work environment. It was ranked second in the 6th edition of Jobs Rated Almanac.

U.S. Department of Labor projections indicate a growing need for actuaries in coming years. Employment growth is expected in finance and investment, banking, software development, health services and management, and actuarial consulting. The rise in terrorism is expected to increase the need for experts in risk assessment and risk management.

Our Actuarial science students find employment in the field, with 100% job placements for the past three years.
