The International Studies minor in the College of Arts and Sciences Programs is intended to give the student a fundamental level of intercultural competence. This requires knowledge of both language and culture, integrated with an understanding of the principles of intercultural communications.

Minor in International Studies

Required courses:  (18+ credit hours) Credits
Language study - (one class must be at intermediate level) 8-10
Language specific culture/literature 3
Intercultural Studies/communication 3
One upper division multicultural course of the student's choice 3

1)

Language skills must be demonstrated at the intermediate level in one language.
A semester each of several languages will not fulfill this requirement.

The language credits may be taken at Maryville or at a site abroad.

Transfer credits will be evaluated in the customary manner. A student may bring in AP or CLEP credits from high school, transfer credits from another post-secondary institution or, in special cases, may be exempt from the credit or requirement by taking extra credits under points 2-4.

2)

The culture/literature class must be related to the target language. It may be literature, history, philosophy, etc. If it is a literature class, it may be in the target language or in translation.

This minor is intentionally made flexible so that it may serve students who wish to take most of it at Maryville, yet it will also serve students who take some or the major part of it abroad. One component must be taken abroad.
