An entrance portfolio is required for admission into Art and Design programs in order to demonstrate creative ability, perceptual skills (drawing), basic understanding of 2 and 3 dimensional design
(line, texture, space, color, movement), focus and range of aesthetic interests, craft and technical ability.

Students without portfolios or without adequate art experience may enter as Pre-Art and Design students. They take the same art foundation courses as the fully admitted students and are evaluated for admission at the end of Fall and Spring portfolio reviews freshman year.

The final decision for student admission into his/her specific Art and Design Program will be made by the faculty of that program at the end of Spring Semester portfolio reviews, sophomore year.

Admission into the Art Education Program is a two stage process. Students must first submit an entrance portfolio to Art and Design, sophomores and transfer students must then apply separately to The School of Education for admission into the teacher education program.

Maryville University's Art and Design programs are accredited by:

National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD)
Council for Interior Design Education Accreditation (formerly FIDER)
National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
