The Interactive Design B.F.A. program prepares students for professions that create or implement interactive media.  Graduates will meet the growing demand placed on the graphic design, advertising and marketing industries for designers with advanced expertise in the visual, creative and technological components of interactive media. The program incorporates graphic and interactive design (multimedia production and scripting, animation, video production, motion graphics, sound and 3-D modeling) to primarily focus on the production of rich applications for the Internet, mobile devices and computer kiosks.

 The B.F.A. in Interactive Design:

prepares students intellectually and technically for
professions that create or implement interactive media.
provides a balanced, well-rounded approach to the theoretical, practical, technical aspects of interactive design.
educates a designer fluent in the design process/methodology, including the ability to define, research and generate multiple solutions to design challenges
encourages creative problem solving and critical thinking.
provides a strong foundation in the history of art and visual communication.
includes a strong foundation in and broad exposure to the technology to create interactive applications, and encourage
self-reliance and perpetual learning.

Maryville’s graduates should have a distinct and marketable edge by possessing an in-demand technical skill set, a strong background in visual communication and creativity, and a well-rounded liberal arts general education.

The degree’s immersion in technology, animation, film, music, mobile devices and the internet embraces contemporary modes of communication, yet study is anchored in formal design theory, art/design history, and Maryville’s strong commitment to a liberal arts education.

The new program builds on the success of the Graphic Design program, which graduates marketable and sought after designers. The network of design alumni and internship partners already in existence is an asset to the Interactive Design students as well.

Maryville University currently has the largest AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) student chapter in the state. This national design association–www.aiga.org, serves both Interactive and Graphic Design students. Student members attend lectures, interact with professionals and participate in the annual AIGA St. Louis Student Conference.

The market demand for interactive designers is growing rapidly. Designers with Web site design and animation experience are especially valuable as interactive media design projects flourish—Web sites, video games, cellular telephones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other technology.

The expanding market for Web-based information and expansion of the video entertainment market, including television, movies, video, and made-for-Internet outlets requires designers capable of solving creative, visual, technical and organizational challenges.

It is expected that Maryville’s Interactive Design graduate will be fully prepared to enter the professional arena. Graduates will be qualified to fulfill the shortage of such designers in the St. Louis region, but perhaps more importantly, their education and experience will make them strong candidates for competitive positions anywhere in the country.

Students wishing to continue on to graduate school should also be well qualified to do so.
