History is the analytical reconstruction and interpretation of the past. Many people study history for its own sake, but the critical insights it brings make it one of the most relevant areas of study for understanding one's own times and environment. An understanding of history is essential for knowing the context within which one lives and works.

History overlaps and cuts across several other disciplines. The study of history emphasizes relationships among events, ideas, and cultures from all times and places.

Because of this breadth, history provides an ideal focus for a liberal education and a useful basis for life-long learning. It is an essential part of higher education. At the same time, the history curriculum instills valuable communication, research, and analytical skills.

History majors at Maryville University have the opportunity to earn academic credit for internships in local institutions such as museums, archives and libraries

History majors may pursue teacher certification as secondary teachers in conjunction with the School of Education at Maryville. They may also apply for early entry into the master's program in education.

The history major, as the center of a liberal arts program or in conjunction with a professional program, provides students with many options for careers. A major in history may lead to a career in research, writing, teaching, historical editing, museum curatorship, or archival and historical administration. The history major is a particularly good preparation for the civil service examination. In addition, skills in research, critical analysis, information retrieval and communications, along with an understanding of different cultures provide a good foundation for careers in the travel industry, communications (media and publishing), and business.

The study of history also provides a good foundation for pre-professional education in several areas and helps to prepare students for professional school entrance examinations in the areas of law, international relations, library science, urban planning, and business administration.
