The English major develops competence in the
analysis, discussion and criticism of literature. Each student's program of studies is
developed in consultation with a faculty adviser. A minor is required.
Writing courses may be counted toward the writing minor.
|

Qualified English majors may also apply in their junior year for admission to the
Elementary Education 3/2 Bridge Program, leading to the M.A. in Education.
Besides preparing students for teaching, the English major has proved to be excellent
preparation for law and for other fields which require clear thinking and writing.
Minor in English
A total of 15 credits in upper division courses as approved by an
adviser are required
for a minor in English.

A minimum of 33 credit hours, at least 27 of which must be from courses
at the 200 level or above, (ENGL 101 and ENGL 104 may not be counted
toward the major.) Students must take: ENGL 316 Survey of English
Literature I and ENGL 317 Survey of English Literature II. Students must
also take either ENGL 312 History of Literary Criticism or ENGL 498
Seminar in Language Study as a capstone course. Faculty recommend that
English majors take this capstone course during their junior or senior
year.
For the other courses, studies may range widely in the literatures of American,
England, the Continent and non-Western cultures. These courses aim to enrich the student's
conceptual world and to sharpen the aesthetic sensibilities. Since they include discussion
and the writing of essays, they also help students become more articulate.
The English faculty strongly recommend that the English major select at least one upper
division writing course. |
