Some candidates enter Maryville as undergraduates wanting to complete an
academic major in English or Psychology as well as elementary education
licensure. In order to capitalize on both interests, Maryville
University offers the opportunity to earn both the B.A. and the M.A. in
Education in a 5-year program that bridges the student through both
programs and prepares them for licensure. Candidates who complete the
M.A. in Education have enhanced salaries. Candidates spend 7 semesters
minimum working in public school settings learning the skills necessary
to produce high achievement in their students.
Maryville’s School of Education has been recognized for its work at the
elementary level by the Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary
Education, various local school districts, and as part of John Goodlad’s
National Network for Educational Renewal. In addition, it has a
longstanding history with the St. Louis early childhood magnet school
program.

Students will apply for admission to the 3/2 program (both the Master’s and
teacher education) at the end of their junior fall term. Students must have
seven (7) upper division English courses (28 hours). At this point they will
have a total of 12 hours of education course work which, if they choose not to
continue or are denied entrance to education, they could use as electives in the
English major.
English elective must meet categories for certification for the state of
Missouri. This takes joint advising from the faculty in English in the College
of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education faculty. |
