The purpose of academic advising is to provide information to students as they develop a meaning educational plan which is

compatible with their life goals. It should be viewed as a continuous process of clarification and evaluation. An academic adviser assists by helping to identify alternatives for students as part of the advising process.

Maryville University provides a special advising program for new students. This program is administered by the Retention & Advising Office. In this advising session, classes for the first semester are planned and scheduled. In addition, the student receives general information about the University.

Declared Major  
  Students who have declared a major are assigned a faculty adviser in an area associated with their major field of study. Faculty advisers help guide students in the development of an academic program consistent with their personal goals and Maryville’s institutional standards.

Undeclared Major  
  Students who have not declared a major (undeclared) will meet with staff in the Career Education Office to begin the process of exploring career options and majors. Undeclared students are advised in the Retention & Advising Office.

A list of assigned faculty advisers is available in the Retention & Advising Office. Students may request a change of adviser by contacting the Retention & Advising Office. Students must secure the approval of the academic adviser prior to the selection of classes each semester. It is highly recommended that students meet regularly with their faculty adviser to discuss matter related to progress and to schedule classes.
