Law schools are eager for students who possess strong communication, analytical and research skills, and who have some understanding of what shapes the human experience. As specific courses of study are not required for admission to law schools, the major you choose is not as important as the quality of education you receive. If you are considering law school, you should pursue a degree that is challenging, one that reflects your capacity to perform well at an academically rigorous level.
Program Features
Stepping Stone to Law School
Pre-Law at Maryville is not a degree, but a program of study. It provides you with a broad liberal arts curriculum in preparation for law school. Many students in the Pre-Law program choose majors in legal studies, history, English or liberal studies with concentrations in political science or philosophy.
Preparing for the LSAT
Students interested in the pre-law program are strongly encouraged to seek information from the Pre-Law advisor at Maryville University regarding the Law School Admission Test (LSAT).
Internship Program
As a Pre-Law student, you may participate in an internship program for credit. The internship with a local court, law firm or government agency will help you explore careers in law and gain valuable experience before attempting admission to law school. Such internships may also lead to excellent recommendations for admission to law school.
Maryville University Legal Association (MULA)
Pre-Law students may participate in the Maryville University Legal Association (MULA), which offers further exposure to the area's legal field including practicing attorneys, judges and law school admissions counselors.
Professional/Career Opportunities
Most law school graduates begin their careers in positions traditionally associated with law degrees. They become lawyers in firms of varying sizes, or open their own firm. Some work for the government in federal, state, local agencies or with the military.
Others acquire positions in business or industry and become attorneys for corporations, accounting firms, insurance companies and financial institutions. These are just a few of the opportunities that await graduates from law schools. The possibilities with a law degree really are boundless.
Degree Offerings
